A Warm Welcome to
New Teachers

The Leffell School is pleased to welcome new teachers to the staff this year. Here is just a sampling of the rich talent that will benefit students and families.

Anat Ankava Middle School Hebrew Department Chair

Background Born and raised in Israel, Anat holds a BA in Psychology and Guidance Counseling and an MA in Math Education. She previously worked at Carmel Academy and has done extensive professional development.

Teaching Philosophy Anat relishes helping students cultivate their connection to Hebrew, Jewish texts and practices, and Israel. “There is no greater pleasure … than to hear from former students about how much they appreciate the foundational skills and knowledge that they received … [and that] their connection to Israel and Judaism is still strong, current, and alive.”

Goals Anat looks forward to helping teachers engage students in learning Hebrew and to bringing Israel to life for them.

Joseph Bennett-Heymann High School Science Teacher

Background Joe holds two undergraduate degrees and a Master’s in Teaching from Brown University. He has taught all over the world including Boston and South Korea.

Teaching Philosophy Joe believes that teaching is most effective when it is tailored to students’ needs and works to connect with them on a personal level in order to make them invested in their own learning.

Goals Joe hopes to help students achieve scientific literacy and inspire them to consider careers in science. “In order to be a functioning, contributing member of society … it is important … to learn how the process of science works and be able to understand and evaluate scientific claims … the biggest challenges of today’s world, such as Covid-19 and climate change, are problems primarily addressed by the scientific community.”

Amy Goodman Lower School General Studies Teacher

Background After working for 12 years in the television and film industry, Amy went back to school to pursue her love for connecting with children and cultivating their self-esteem, ultimately earning Master’s degrees in Childhood Education and Literacy. Amy previously taught at The Dalton School in Manhattan.

Teaching Philosophy Amy uses an inclusive, dynamic, hands-on curriculum that inspires a love for learning in students. She believes in the importance of educating the whole child and incorporates teaching about growth mindset, mindfulness, and character traits in her classroom.

Goals Amy hopes to create a supportive and inspiring classroom environment where every student feels comfortable and excited to learn. “Amid these times of uncertainty, I hope the classroom can be a haven for learning, fun, kindness, and friendship.”
